The local currency used in the Maldives is known as the Maldivian Rufiya (MRf) and is valued at MRf 12.85 to U$ 1. The comes in both notes and coins, with the notes having the denominations of MRf500, MRf100, MRf50, MRf20, MRf10 and MRf5. And the coins comes in denominations of MRf2, MRf1 and 50 laari, 25 laari, 10 laari, 5 laari, 2 laari and 1 laari ( 100 laari equal MRf 1).
US Dollars and a number of major currencies of the world are accepted at most tourist establishments and so are most major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Diners Club and JCB). Travellers cheques are widely accepted as well, but note that coins of foreign currencies are not accepted.
